I just discovered Clayton Patterson's 2008 film Captured. It is a must see for anyone interested in New York's cultural history, the influence of documenting your surroundings, outsider art and general rebellion.
Clayton documented his surroundings in the Lower East Side from the late 70s, and managed to capture so much dynamism and spirit of the people that lived there in his photographs and later with a video camera, the results are the basis of Captured.
You can watch it free online. I would highly recommend it, although it did leave me questioning a lot of things about my changing surroundings and the bad habit we have of romanticizing our recent past...anyway, check it out, if only for Clayton's amazing embroidered caps.
